During this season of remembering our Lord and Saviour’s birth on this earth, I believe it is important to remember who our Lord and Saviour really was, is and will always be. With all the Christmas focus on Santa Claus, even when we meet for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day services at church, discussion and reflection on who our Lord really is, sometimes gets over looked.
We picture the baby in the manager, and the manager scene pictures we have in our yards, houses, and churches. We celebrate the birth of Jesus our Lord and Saviour. Who came to save us from our sins and provide a way for us sinners to go to heaven and live with God for eternity.
The fact that when our Lord and Saviour was born as a human baby in the manager, was not his creation, but that he had always existed and will always exist seems to be subdued.
The fact that our Lord Jesus was God and has always existed, is something difficult to understand for many people. The Trinity has always seemed to be something we can have knowledge of, but even the greatest theologians cannot completely understand or explain. How our God can be one God in three persons is something supernatural and beyond real human understanding.
Last month the pastor at our church had a series of sermons on who our Lord Jesus was. He used Isaiah 9:6 to describe who Jesus was when He was born in the manger on what we celebrate as Christmas day. Then over last weekend, I continuously saw this verse in different venues. I use an app on my cell phone, it is the Bible app made by “YouVersion”. I don’t always look at the daily scriptures they display on this app, as I have my own devotions, as detailed in my devotions post. I viewed the verse on Christmas day and guess what it was, Isaiah 9:6. I then came up with the content for this post. I decided to post it today on the eve of the New Year, as a reminder of what our Lords birth on this earth meant for us all.
“For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace. 7 Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to order it, and to establish it with judgment and with justice from henceforth even for ever.” (Isaiah 9:6-7)
Often I hear people mention our Lord and Saviour as though he was just a human with power. Many non-Christian religions teach that Jesus was just another prophet or a man born filled with the Holy Spirit who had the power of God.
Even Christians whose foundation of their faith is the fact that our Lord Jesus was God on earth, still often seem to downplay his power and majesty. Every Christmas Eve I read the “Christmas story” to my family from the scriptures. When I read the story, I also read the story of the birth of John the Baptist. Even the movie that came out several years ago, “The Nativity Story” depicts the birth of John the Baptist. We know that John the Baptist was predestined by God to go before our Lord and Saviour, and prepare the way for His ministry on earth.
The Bible tells us John was filled with the Holy Spirit from birth. The Bible does not say anything about our Lord being filled with the Holy Spirit from birth or at any point in His life on this earth. Why, because He is God. Jesus, God the father and the Holy Spirit are One.
Christ always has been and will always be, the Great “I Am”. This time of year when we reflect on our Lords birth, may we see him, not as just a Baby born in a manger, but as our Wonderful Saviour, our Counsellor and guide for our lives, the Mighty God, Everlasting Father, and the Prince of Peace. May we truly understand why He came to this earth and thank Him in prayer daily.
May God bless you and your family in the New Year, and may we always be ready for the return of our Lord to this earth. In Christ.
