Almighty God

Have you ever thought about the term Almighty God? What a powerful name for our God who created all, who has no beginning or end. I have discovered something interesting about this name for God. For consistency the King James Version Bible is used for the references in this post.

What I discovered was the name Almighty God was used in the book of Genesis and once in Exodus. The words God and Almighty are then used in several books of the Old Testament, but not in the sequence of Almighty God. If you find this specific term in the New Testament other than Revelation let me know, as I used several digital search engines to try to find it used in the other New Testament books, it was not.

Interesting that Almighty God was used for the name of God in Genesis the first book of the Bible and Revelation, the last. In Genesis 17:1 God renews the covenant with Abraham “And when Abram was ninety years old and nine, the LORD appeared to Abram, and said unto him, I am the Almighty God; walk before me, and be thou perfect.”

This was the first time the term Almighty God was used in scripture. The last time this name is mentioned in scripture was in Revelation when the new Jerusalem was being described “And I saw no temple therein: for the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are the temple of it.” (Rev. 21:22)

The Alpha and Omega, called Almighty God in the first and last books of the Bible. What a powerful, holy and righteous God we serve. The one verse in Exodus 6:3 which used the name Almighty God, did so for God to change his name to Jehovah “And I appeared unto Abraham, unto Isaac, and unto Jacob, by the name of God Almighty, but by my name JEHOVAH was I not known to them.”

This was told to Moses as a renewal of the Covenant with Abraham to free God’s people from Egypt and lead them to the promised land. The name “I AM” is used throughout the scriptures for God and you can read my post entitled “I AM” for more on that name; which is a name for God which demonstrates God’s power and authority over all.

Our God is the Almighty God, he is Omnipotent, infinite in power and is the God we serve as Christians. I would ask that you read Revelation 4:8 with me and meditate (think about) the last part of the passage, not the beasts, but the worship to the Almighty God.

This chapter in Revelation is not about trying to figure out who the creatures all were, it is about constant day and night worship to Almighty God. May we all come to a closer relationship with God where we worship Him day and night in all we do.

“And the four beasts had each of them six wings about him; and they were full of eyes within: and they rest not day and night, saying, Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, which was, and is, and is to come.” (Revelation 4:8)

If you do not know the Almighty God or do not have a relationship with him, please see my Salvation page on this site, contact a Christian friend, or seek a local pastor to learn how to have a spiritual relationship with the Almighty God.

In Christ,
