Cherubims

I have been studying the book of Ezekiel over the last several weeks.  After reading chapter one, the description of the cherubim’s resonated with me.  I then pulled out my Halley’s Bible Handbook and started looking up what it contained concerning the cherubim’s.  I also pulled out my Scofield study bible, to see Dr. C. I. Scofield’s notes on these angelic beings.

After doing my study into these angels I meditated on the information, and I thought back to when I was young.  I remember seeing pictures of these small kids with a baby like face with wings, some had harps and  they would be called cherubim’s and seraphim’s.  I think they completely got that depiction wrong.

Ezekiel and Revelation both describe cherubim’s and what there physical features are.  I decided to look up the name cherubim on the web, I saw those pictures of the little kids with wings again, but I also saw pictures people drafted based on the descriptions of Ezekiel and John. I went back to Genesis 3:24, and read about the cherubim’s being placed by God to guard the Garden of Eden so no man would ever find it again. I read Exodus 25: 18-20 where Moses describes how he is to place the golden Cherubim statues on top of the Ark of the Covenant facing toward the mercy seat on top of the ark.

Reading the handbook and the bible notes, both noted that the cherubim’s were to guard the Holiness of God.  From the bible notes Dr. Scofield stated he believed they are to protect the Holiness of God from sinful man. I thought wow, these angelic being are completely opposite of the baby faced kid angels in some pictures and depictions.

Actually, it would seem to me, these angels are the elite guards of God himself, wow what a thought. God placed them in front of the Garden of Eden to ensure we never entered again, imagine their powers.  God had statues of them placed on top of the ark to guard His mercy seat. We see in I Kings 6-8 and in II Chronicles, two large wooden statues of cherubim’s were placed in the temple. In Ezekiel and John’s visions of them they describe them as beasts and living creatures,  these angels are always beside God’s throne, and are worshipping Him and guarding His throne.  They seem to be the closest to God of all the angels.  How amazing this was for me to research and study this subject again.  My wife and I have studied angels before and discussed them on numerous occasions, but this study on the Cherubim really stood out to me this time.

What amazing creatures, I would have to assume from what information we have that this order of angels are possibly above all others.  It made me wonder, Satan was an angel that legions of other angels followed and would actual turn on God for him, I would wonder if he may have been a Cherubim.  One day I will know all of this and will see a Cherubim and bow down with them to worship our God,  what a wonderful day that will be.  In Christ.
